Fishin’ Fun

I’ve spent a lot of time on the water this past week.  I decided to split my time between bass fishing and spec fishing.  It seems to me that lately the specs don’t get active until about 8:30 a.m.  Bass fishing is usually best early in the morning, right at dawn. So I would bass fish for a couple of hours and then spec fish till around noon. Just about every morning I would check different places for bass.  I would usually catch three to five bass.  Most of them I was catching on a Carolina Rig or a small hard jerk bait if I was around some bass that were schooling.
We concentrated our spec fishing around Marker 26 and between the two big islands.  We tried drifting and trolling with a Hal-Fly tipped with a minnow.
Most of the specs we caught were while trolling.  Eight to 10 feet of water was where we had the best luck.  We normally caught about five to 10 nice specs on each outing.  The other people out there who were spec fishing told me it had been a lot better before it warmed up and before the full moon came around.  I haven’t done a whole lot of spec fishing in the past, but I’ve found that it’s fun and relaxing.
Several of the bass guides that I’ve talked to say that shiner fishing for bass is improving daily.  Catches of 10 to 15 bass in four hours is about normal for a half day.
Some bluegills and shell crackers are still being caught, but not as many as a month ago.
If you get a chance, get on the water and do some fishing; it’s good for the soul.
