State cross country

Three Osceola  County runners will compete at the state track meets at Tallahassee’s Apalachee Regional park today at 8 a.m.

St. Cloud’s Karissa Solorzano placed eighth (20:01.50) at the 3A-2 regional cross country meet at Lecanto to qualify for the Class 3A state meet. Joining her is teammate Antonio Montalvo (13th, 16:38.38).

Poinciana’s Christian Ramos (17:17) was fourth at the Class 2A-2 regional at Lake Nona. He will compete at the 2A state meet.

“I am very proud of Christian. He was in contention to win the race at the mile, but he could not hold the pace,” Eagles Coach Bryan McLoughlin said.

No local team advanced to the state meets. St. Cloud’s girls (194) placed seventh and Osceola (306) was 13th at the regional at Lecanto, while Osceola’s boys were ninth (256) and Celebration (302) was 12th.

Poinciana’s boys were seventh (228) at the 2A-2 regional. Liberty’s boys were 11th (264) at the 4A-1 regional at Gainesville.

State swimmers

Harmony earned its first Class 2A state swimming meet medals since 2008 last week when Luke Roberts finished eighth in the 100 freestyle and the Horns’ 200 freestyle relay team was seventh.

Roberts’ time of 48.05 broke the school record. He placed 10th in the 50 free in 21.98 seconds, a school and Osceola County record.

Roberts also was a member of the 200 free relay with Michael Driscoll, Sam Steele and John Roberts.

“The boys really did well,” Coach Terry Brown said.

St. Cloud High diver Madison Clayton (305) placed 16th at the 2A state meet.

During the Class 3A state meet, Osceola diver Jordan Parrish (344.2) placed 15th in the girls competition and Josue Herrera (361.35) finished 10th in the boys standings.

“I am super proud of them, they really did amazing,” OHS Coach Krystle Singleton said. “I can’t wait to see what they will do as seniors.”

Correction

Tom Bell is the head coach of the Osceola Kowboys soccer team. A story in the Nov. 10 News-Gazette incorrectly stated that assistant coach Bill Jakoby was the team’s head coach.
