A Kissimmee man was arrested Thursday for battering a law enforcement officer so severely, the officer was treated at the hospital for his injuries.

On Nov. 11 at approximately 6:00 p.m., a Kissimmee police officer attempted to take Detrick “Pookie” Matthews, 30, into custody for an outstanding traffic warrant.

Matthews resisted the officer and physically struck the officer causing serious bodily injury.

The officer was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released, spokeswoman Stacie Miller said.

“He injured the officer where the officer had to disengage and (Matthews) got away,” she said, adding Matthews is well known to local law enforcement.

An arrest warrant was obtained by the Kissimmee Police Department charging Matthews with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.

“Individuals like Mr. Matthews who take aggressive actions against law enforcement officers are a serious threat to the citizens of Kissimmee and therefore become a high priority for the Kissimmee Police Department,” Chief Lee Massie said.

According to police, Matthews has a long criminal history that includes violence against law enforcement officers. His last known address was listed 1607 Mabbette St. in Kissimmee.

The Kissimmee Police Department’s Tactical Investigative Unit Thursday apprehended Matthews and transported him to the Osceola County Jail where he is being held on $11,000 bond.
