Poinciana will try to get back on the football field Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a 5A-7 district game at Eustis.

Because of a staph infection outbreak that affected 13 players, the Eagles had to forfeit last week’s district contest at Port Orange Atlantic because they did not have enough players to fill the varsity squad.

The problem seemed to be under control early this week and Coach Corey Fleming said the team should be ready to go Friday.

“It’s been crazy. We will be ready on Friday unless anything happens between now and then,” Fleming said.

The Eagles are 1-7 and 0-4 in the district.

The football regular season is coming to a close for several county football teams this week including Celebration, Life Academy, Gateway and Harmony.

Celebration, 0-9 and 0-4, will try to snap a 19-game losing streak against Liberty, 1-7 and 1-3, Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Storm Field.

The Storm lost at St. Cloud, 49-0, last week.

Liberty fell to Osceola, 43-6 last week.

“We just couldn’t get anything going offensively. There were a lot of situations where, if we hold our blocks another half-second, I think we could have had some success,” Coach David Benson said. “I was thinking at first that we were just getting blown off the ball, but they are so quick that if you don’t hold your blocks, they’ll come through.

“Now we want to win these last two games and get ready for better things next season.”

Gateway and Harmony remain alive for regional playoff berths pending the outcome of their games Friday.

Life Academy, 1-6, did not play last week when its game against Merritt Island Christian was canceled.

The Lions play Cornerstone Charter at Archie Gordon Park Friday at 6:30 p.m. Coach Mike Bonneville said the team also will participate in a postseason contest Nov. 9.
