POW-WWII-Florida

Above is a photo included with the traveling exhibit, Humanity Beyond Barbed Wire: Hitler’s Soldiers in the Sunshine State.

The Museum of Military History is bringing the traveling exhibit, Humanity Beyond Barbed Wire: Hitler’s Soldiers in the Sunshine State, to Osceola County on view from Nov. 9 to Dec. 30. The Florida Holocaust Museum created exhibition is based on a book by Robert Billinger called “Hitler’s Soldiers in the Sunshine State.” It illustrates the principles of a democratic nation and the humane treatment of enemy combatants during WWII. A history of hate caused millions of deaths during the Holocaust. However, the treatment of German POWs in the United States during World War II created an obvious contrast as many former German POWs looked back on their experiences as positive ones.

The Museum of Military History’s mission is to educate, increase awareness and build knowledge and understanding of the American military experience. The thought of prisoner of war camps located in Florida is a surprise to many current residents of Osceola County.

This exhibit rolls back history to the 1940’s Florida, a primarily rural southern state was dependent on agriculture. Prisoners worked in the citrus groves to pick fruit while most of America’s labor force was engaged in war efforts. See the insights into this era of Florida’s history through the eyes of those that witnessed this period of Florida’s history.

Sponsors for the project include BB&T Bank and supported by media sponsor the Osceola News Gazette.

For more information on the exhibit, call 407-507-3894 or visit the website at MuseumofMilitaryHistory.com.
