HHS swim champ

Harmony’s boys defended its district title and the girls were a close second to Winter Haven at the 2A District 7 swimming meet Thursday at the Rowdy Gaines pool at Winter Haven.

The boys team tallied 442 points and were led by champion Lucas Roberts in the 50 (23.07) and 100 (50.02) freestyle

The Horns took the top three spots in those events.

Harmony also claimed the 200 (1:33.91), and 400 freestyle (3:26.11) relays.

For the Lady Longhorns, Katy Davis won the 200 (1:02.62) and 500 freestyle (5:29.93).Emily Walker claimed the 100 breaststroke (1:03.48).

Next up is the Region 3 meet at North Shore Pool in Dunedin on Nov. 3.

PHS forfeits

Due to a staph infection that spread to 13 football players, Poinciana forfeited its 5A-7 district football game to Port Orange Atlantic Thursday.

The loss drops the Eagles record to 1-7.

Osceola School District Athletics Coordinator Ryan Adams said school staff members are doing an intensive cleaning of the locker rooms to eliminate the infection.

“We’d rather be over-reactive in this instance to make sure that the area is completely cleaned,” Adams said.

Because of Hurricane Sandy, Volusia County schools moved their football games to Thursday or Monday.

Adams said because PHS is not sure whether it will have enough healthy players to field a team Monday, it forfeited.
