A St. Cloud man was arrested for attempting to use counterfeit money at two local stores, St. Cloud police said.

Thomas Fertic on Sept. 1 entered the Circle K convenience store, located at 613 13th Street in St. Cloud and allegedly tried to pay for his merchandise with a counterfeit $20 bill.

The clerk immediately recognized that the bill appeared to be counterfeit, as it already had markings on the front from a counterfeit-detection pen, according to police.

When told by the clerk that the bill was counterfeit, Fertic asked for it back.  The clerk refused to hand it over to him and Fertic left the store.

On the same day at a later time, Fertic was involved in another incident at the CVS Pharmacy, 2105 13th Street, St. Cloud. He again allegedly attempted to use a counterfeit $20 bill at that location but the clerk refused it.  She returned the bill to Fertic and he left the scene.

Police issued a warrant Sept. 25 for Fertic reference to uttering a forged instrument.

On Monday, Fertic turned himself in at the Osceola County Jail where he posted bond and was released.
