Writer Now that the children are surviving and hopefully-thriving this 2012-13 school year, how about learning something new?

The Poinciana Branch Library has several computer skills programs this month, offered in both English and Spanish.

With the holidays fast approaching, people often think about personalizing or creating their own greeting cards. By attending the Microsoft Publisher 2010 session on Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., you can learn that and more. Learn how to use the different templates, lay-outs and color schemes to create this and more, including simple publications such as cards, flyers, brochures and newsletters.

Also on Friday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., a program on how to use Microsoft Power Point 2010 will be offered. Microsoft Power Point 2010 allows users to make stellar presentations.

These two programs will be offered in English. On Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Microsoft Publisher will be offered in Spanish. From 2 to 3:30 p.m., Microsoft Power Point 2010 also will be offered in Spanish.

Keep the computer education going with Microsoft Word 2010 Oct. 12, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Follow up from 2 to 3 p.m. with Mouseersize, a workshop that teaches users with little or no experience master mouse and laptop keyboard usage.

These two sessions on the will be in English. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the same courses at the same time will be held in Spanish.

The Poinciana Library has special events planned for children as well during the month of October. Jammy Jamboree is the library’s way of tucking youngsters into bed for the night. Children come in their pajamas, bring a stuffed animal and listen to a bed time story. This will be offered twice this month- Oct. 11 and Oct. 25, from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Bring your little ghouls and boys to enjoy a night of seasonal fun on Monday, Oct. 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Halloween Fun for Families will be a night of scary tales, creepy crafts and spooky activities. Costumes are encouraged and the whole family is invited.

All library programs are free and open to the public.

Furry Tails Pet Grooming, located at the Publix Promenade Shopping Plaza on Cypress Parkway, will present their Third Annual Paw Festival The Paw Festival will be on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m.

This is a pet and people party. There will be a dog costume contest; an owner and pet look-a-like contestant face painting (for humans). Games, prizes and raffles are part of the fun. Refreshments, candy for the kids and pet tears round out the day.
