In the final days of her tenure with the Kissimmee Police Department, outgoing Chief Fran Iwanski Thursday accepted the department’s first state accreditation.

The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation met in Sarasota and awarded the Kissimmee Police Department their initial state accreditation certification by unanimous vote.

“I am very proud of the men and women of the Kissimmee Police Department who work hard each day to serve this city. CFA accreditation is proof of our commitment to providing superior services to our community,” Iwanski said in a statement.

Accreditation is a coveted award that symbolizes professional excellence within the law enforcement community. It insures that proper policies and procedures are in place and that all facets of police operations are maintained within acceptable legal and professional limits.

To become a CFA accredited agency, an on-site inspection by a team of authorized CFA assessors was completed to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.

A team of assessors from the CFA Aug. 9 examined the department’s general orders, management, operations, and support services.

The CFA accreditation is valid for three years, at which time the department must apply for a review and re-accreditation.

The accreditation was awarded just days before new Kissimmee police chief Lee Massie is slated Monday to take over for Iwanski, who is retiring from the department after 25 years on the force.
