The Florida Christian College women’s sports program is expanding.
For the first time, the Kissimmee college will have a women’s soccer team, led by Coach Doug Johnson.
Johnson added St. Cloud High graduate Lynnsey Glunt to his roster for the team’s inaugural season.
“We’ve got a very strong roster, and it’s great to have Lynnsey with us. She’s one of those players who could play anywhere, a solid player and the kind of girl that I want to have representing FCC soccer,” Johnson said.
The soccer team plays today at 7 p.m. against Florida College at Austin-Tindall Park.
The volleyball team begins its regular season Thursday at Lake Sumter College.
Coach Jim Butski wants to build on the momentum generated by last year’s school record 13 wins.
Butski said that the players have been on the court for the past month for two-a-day practices and have participated in several team building events and service projects.
The Suns return two starters from last year’s team that advanced to play at the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament.
Junior setter Ashley Griswold, from Eustis, will once again run the offense behind the passing of junior defensive specialist Chelsey Zuniga from Cape Coral.
Joining the team for 2012 will be several promising newcomers including S.K. Ferrer from Brandon, Andrea Archuleta from El Paso, Texas, Bethany Martinelli from Vero Beach and Alise Morris from Leesburg.
Butski said that there are many talented players in Central Florida, and in Osceola County, who have the ability to play at the college level.
“I’ve been to some high school matches here and I’ve seen some very good players in the area,” he said. “There are a few who could help us.”
Florida Christian will host its first home game on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. against Northwood University from West Palm Beach. The match will be at the Chapman Center on the FCC campus located on Bill Beck Boulevard across from the Osceola County Stadium.
Home games will also be simulcast live from the athletics page on the fcc.edu website.
