Fishin’ Fun

Well, it’s good to be home, but going from high temperatures in the upper 60s in Alaska to temperatures in the 90s here was just a little bit of a shock. We were fortunate to see five grizzly bears, a couple of black bears, four moose, several caribou, humpback whales and a pod of orcas. Plus some outstanding scenery.  I didn’t get a chance to do any fishing, but I’ve made up for it since getting home last week.

Ross Mitchell holds the 11.5-pounder that was the Big Fish winner at the Big Toho Marina Wednesday night tournament. Mitchell and his dad, Osceola News-Gazette fishing columnist Jacque Mitchell, teamed to win the three-fish limit tournament with a total of 17.6 pounds.

The fishing here hasn’t changed much. The water level has come up over a foot, but the water temps are still in the mid-80s. Tuesday I went out at 6 a.m. and actually did pretty well. I caught seven bass on top water baits. The five biggest weighed about 15 pounds total.
Big Toho Marina’s Tournament Trail held its end of the year tournament last Sunday and it took 28-plus pounds to win.
From what I’ve heard, the first several  place winners all fished down on Lake Kissimmee.
If you want to catch fish on Lake Toho with any consistency I would suggest  that you fish very early in the morning or the last couple of hours in the evening.
Once that sun gets up high in the sky, they shut off pretty fast.
A lot of bluegills are spawning and some good catches have been reported.
I haven’t heard or seen anybody out fishing for specs (crappies). I think the water has to cool down some before they get active again.
