Mark your calendars. The third Friday of each month through December is a celebration of the newly restored HipStoric Downtown District of St. Cloud.
“We wanted to build on what had already been started downtown,” said Paula Stark, interim program manager of St. Cloud Main Street. “The New York Artist Shop has been hosting a local artist on the third Friday for several months. We felt this would be a good extension of the idea and encourage our downtown merchants to stay open later.”
The HipStoric Happy Hour is actually three hours from 5 to 8 p.m. and local downtown businesses will sponsor the evening. Stark said the downtown district has a lot to offer in dining and shopping.
The third Friday also will offer carriage rides through the area, special entertainment at various locations and the showing of a family movie starting after 8 p.m. in Centennial Park on 10th Street between New York and Pennsylvania avenues.
The first of the special Friday openings was March 16 and hosted by Bella Floral Boutique on 10th Street.
The remainder of the year’s sponsors are:
April 20: Chime & Time Clock Repair, New York Avenue.
May 18: Deese Management, Pennsylvania Avenue.
June 15: Crescent’s Coffee and Tea, New York Avenue.
July 20: Dance Central, New York Avenue.
Aug. 17: St. Cloud Main Street, Pennsylvania Avenue. (This also is the date for the organization’s annual meeting, which will include the election of officers for the coming year and awards to individuals and businesses.)
Sept. 21: Rayzor’s Edge, New York Avenue.
Oct. 19: Pete and Peg’s Roadhouse Grill, Pennsylvania Avenue.
Nov. 16: The Finishing Touch Salon and Creative Printing, Pennsylvania Avenue.
Dec. 21: Herbalicious Salon & Spa, New York Avenue.
Each third Friday, those who visit at least eight downtown businesses will be entered to win a basket with various items from local merchants.
Two other special promotions are scheduled this year by St. Cloud Main Street.
The ninth annual Smokin Blues, Bikes and BBQ Competition will be on the lakefront May 4 and 5.
“We had about 3,000 (people) attend last year,” Stark said, “and are looking for over 40 barbecuers this year.”
Entry and vendor forms are currently available at the Main Street office and on line at www.stcloudmainstreet.org. They have to be completed by April 6.
There are two divisions for the smokers. The pro-division will offer $1,000 in prize money and trophies to winners in four categories. The backyard division for the non-pros will have cash prizes depending on the number of entries as well as trophies.
The band Trainwreck will perform Friday evening and there will be other entertainment Saturday. A poker run for bikers will take place Saturday morning.
On Oct. 20, the second annual Fall Frenzy on New York and Pennsylvania avenues will feature entertainment and sporting competitions between city of St. Cloud departments and an art competition. Main Street, the St. Cloud Greater Osceola Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Group will combine to put on the Saturday event.
