The Kissimmee Police Department’s Community Relations Squad in conjunction with the Traffic Enforcement Unit has kicked off School Zone Safety Week.

Today through March 16, the officers will be focusing on safety in school zones, according to department spokeswoman Stacie Miller.

The officers will be making sure the students are wearing bike helmets, obeying the crossing guards and practicing good safety techniques.  They will also be cautioning drivers about speeding in school zones, watching for seat belt violations and ensuring child restraints are being used. The officers will be visiting all the school zones within the city limits during the morning and afternoon commutes.

“It is important that we continue to remind students and drivers to practice safety while traveling to and from school,” Police Chief Fran Iwanski said. “The officers will be talking with students about the importance of utilizing bicycle helmets and reminding drivers to proceed with caution in school zones.”
