There were no problems for the Lady Kowboys of Osceola High Thursday when OHS bunched 15 runs and 10 hits into a four-inning rout of out-manned 7A District 5 foe Lake Minneola at Coffey Field.
Osceola, 8-3, got three hits from Kalie Jones, who scored three runs, and three RBIs from Noemi Chavez.
Morgan Crapo allowed one hit while cruising to the victory.
OHS scored all it needed in the first inning when Chavez’s single brought home Jones and Crapo, who each walked and advanced on a wild pitch.
Osceola wrapped it up with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Osceola Coach George Coffey, always happy to earn a district victory, admitted that the competition was not superior Thursday because Lake Minneola was missing three starters for disciplinary reasons.
“That’s not their real team,” he said. “We’ll see a better version Tuesday when we go to their place.”
Still, Coffey was happy to see his team rebound from a challenging trip to the Florida panhandle last weekend where it lost three of four games after running into into several good teams from Georgia and Florida at the Alabama-Georgia Challenge in Panama City.
Osceola beat Marianna, 5-1, as Kenya Pereira and Chantal Crockett each had two hits and two RBIs. Pereira threw a 1-hitter, struck out seven and didn’t allow an earned run.
Osceola lost to host Arnold High, 7-3; Bobby Jones High from Georgia, 7-2 and Hatton High, 10-5.
“We had a situation where maybe we were getting a little full of ourselves before that tournament and since then I think we got that straightened out,” Coffey said.
Harmony, a state finalist last season, is rolling along.
The Lady Longhorns, 8-1, edged Cypress Creek, a team with a pair of D-I signees on its roster, 3-2, last week.
Harmony leads the 7A-6 district standings at 3-0.
“We’re about where I thought we would be. We got a couple good wins over Satellite and Cypress Creek last week,” Harmony Coach Mike Clark said. “We’re still trying to figure out a couple of positions, like you usually are early in the season.”
Senior Dakota McCoy is off to a hot start, batting .500.
Senior Breann Vanderzyl, seriously injured in an auto accident in April, has returned to the lineup earlier than expected and is throwing well in relief, Clark said.
“Lauren (Harris) always plays at a superior level, and for the most part we’re doing well,” Clark said. “We’re going to be getting into the challenging part of the schedule pretty soon, including March 13 (at Osceola).”
St. Cloud is off to a 5-3 start this season, encouraging new coach Ray Whobrey.
“The team is very young and is improving each game,” he said. “My two middle infielders, KaDeisha McCowen and Emily Blackmore, have stepped up big for us. Both are batting .400 and doing a great job defensively.”
Whobrey said senior Maddie Roberts, Emma Wells and catcher Lacey Makinson all have played well.
“Hopefully, we’ll surprise some of the powerhouse teams we will be playing later in the season,” he said.
St. Cloud trails Harmony in the 7A-6 district standings after the Longhorns won their first meeting. The teams play again March 16 at St. Cloud.
