Celebration’s Alvaro Norena was the unlimited weight class runner-up at the Tony Ippolito memorial wrestling tournament at Brandon High Saturday.

The Storm, with only nine wrestlers, placed 10th overall in a 32-field that included the nationally-ranked and Class 3A champion host Eagles and defending Class 2A state champion Spring Hill Springstead.
Norena (34-2) battled Sprinstead’s wrestler, No. 7 in the nation, to a scoreless duel through two periods before he was pinned.
“Alvaro entered the tournament pretty much under the radar. He had three pins, and demonstrated a lot of maturity by winning 1-0 in the semfinals,” Storm Coach Vic Lorenzano said.
Another standout for the Storm was 152-pound J.J. Francis (33-4), who defeated state-qualifier Isaac Henderson from Lake City in overtime after fighting back from a 7-1 deficit. Francis won 3-0 for fifth place after falling in close matches to a state champion and a state qualifier.
“J.J. had the deepest and toughest weight class in the tournament,” Lorenzano said. “Both Alvaro and J.J. continue the trek toward contention at the state tournament.”
Celebration’s Nigel Jolliffie recorded two pins and reached the semifinals at 106 pounds and placed fifth.
Storm wrestlers David Akins, Skylar Lerner, Mark Fam, Wilfredo Colon and Everett Suarez all won at least two matches at Brandon in gritty performances, Lorenzano said.
The Storm will host Poinciana for Senior Night at 7 p.m. tonight.
Gateway’s Christian Vasquez (160) placed third at Brandon.
St. Cloud’s Ryan Finneran (138) was unbeaten (5-0) at the Jensen Beach Duals last weekend.
Joe McGinley (113), Alex Southall (unlimited) and Chris Scavone (152) won four matches for the Bulldogs.
St. Cloud beat Chaminade Madonna and Archbishop McCarthy at the tournament and finished 2-3 as a team.
The Bulldogs compete today at 2 p.m. at OHS.
St. Cloud will host the 2A-5 district next week and the 2A-2 regional Feb. 10-11. Celebration and Harmony join St. Cloud in district 2A-5.
Osceola will host the 3A-5 district tournament next week. Gateway and Liberty will compete there. Poinciana wrestles at the A-4 tournament.
