Osceola High baseball player Edwin Rios said he “came out of nowhere” to impress college baseball coaches at showcase tournaments over the past several months.
The result is that the player from nowhere will go somewhere to play college baseball next year.

Rios signed a letter of intent at the OHS gym to Florida International University in Miami during the NCAA’s early signing period.
“The coaches said they were very impressed, that I came out of the blue, when they saw me play,” Rios, a native of Puerto Rico who has lived in Kissimmee for 12 years, said.
Rios plays the outfield for Coach Scott Birchler’s Kowboys, but he said he will move to third base at FIU.
“It doesn’t matter to me, I like them both,” he said.
Rios will play for Turtle Thomas at FIU, a NCAA D-1 Sun Belt Conference program.
Birchler, who will begin his second season as the OHS coach after starting the program at Liberty, isn’t surprised that Rios landed a major college baseball scholarship.
“He is a great skill player, a dominant hitter who swings a real good bat,” Birchler said. “He is going to have success at the next level, and I really believe that he is going to have a professional career.”
Rios said he chose FIU because he likes the campus and the baseball program.
“And, because I wanted to stay in Florida,” he said. “I didn’t want to go north.”
Joining Rios at his signing ceremony were his parents, Edwin Rios Sr. and Heyda Rios, and his brothers, Jiancarlos and Gustavo. His Kowboys teammates also attended.
