Gateway moved to 4-3 on the season with a 10-3 win at Cypress Creek on Thursday.

Efrem Mitchell’s 20-yard touchdown run broke a tie in the third quarter to give Gateway a fourth win, its most since 2004 with three games left. The Bears fell to 0-7.

“It went exactly as I thought,” GHS Coach Marlin Roberts said. “I know they play a tough schedule and it was their homecoming so they’d look at us as a team they could beat. I thought our kids on defense played a heck of a game.”

Gateway trailed 3-0 at the half, but tied it on Walter Marquez’s 41-yard field.

Cypress Creek had a chance to tie with two minutes left after recovering a fumble at the Panthers’ 25, but Gateway’s defense forced a four-and-out to put it away.

The Panthers play at Celebration in a crucial 7A District 6 test this Thursday. The Storm (0-7) entered the record books Thursday, but for the wrong reason. Lake Nona (5-1) quarterback Tucker Israel threw for a state-record 10 TD passes in the Lions’ 68-10 win.
