The National Weather Service today at 11 a.m. continued to have a flood warning in effect for Shingle Creek at Campbell City, south of Kissimmee.

According to the service's website, due to heavy rain Saturday and Sunday Shingle Creek has risen steadily and is expected to crest later today just above flood stage, followed by a slow fall through mid-week.

The service also warned that if there is any additional heavy rain in the creek's drainage basin, the water level could rise farther before falling. Flood stage on the stream is 59 feet and it had exceeded that level slightly earlier today.

The forecast calls for numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms in the region, with gusty winds between 40 and 50 mph expected with any storms that form.

In addition, the heavy rain over the past two days – between 5 and 10 inches in places – has saturated the ground and any strong winds would be capable of blowing down trees, especially those with weak or shallow root systems.

The weather system that spun in place over the Florida Peninsula is lifting to the north and rain associated with it will diminish, according to the service website.
