Participants in this year’s Halloween Fright-K event won’t be running from monsters and ghouls – they will be running for a cause.
The third annual costumed 5k event is sponsored by the St. Cloud Police Department and its 501(3) charitable group, We Dare to Care Foundation.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the families of fallen Kissimmee police officers Matthew Baxter and Sam Howard, who were both fatally shot in the line of duty in August.
“Being so close to Kissimmee and KPD, many of our officers are close friends with many of their officers,” said Anthony Miller, public information officer for the St. Cloud Police Department.
In years past, the department and We Dare to Care have donated proceeds to cancer patients, transplant patients and others in-need in the community.
Even though Baxter and Howard worked for the city of Kissimmee, not St. Cloud, Harper said the law enforcement agency wanted a way to show support for their fellow Osceola officers.
“We are all a blue family,” Miller said. “And we protect our families.”
The Halloween Fright-K is a family-friendly event complete with costume contests and trick-or-treat opportunities before and after the race. Children under the age of 12 can participate for free with a paying adult.
A silent auction will also be held to raise money for the officers’ families. The top prize is an all-inclusive two-night stay at the Reunion Golf Resort valued at $2,000.
Those interested in participating can register for the event up until the morning of the race by visiting eventbrite.com and using the keyword “Halloween Fright-K.”
The Halloween Fright-K will be at 8 a.m. Saturday in St. Cloud Lakefront Park.
Tickets are $30 for adults. For more information, contact Harper at 407-891-6725.
