Get fresh down on the farm

Orlando North, Seminole County has a personality all its own. Its attractions are not man-made theme parks — rather, they are Mother Nature’s outdoor parks, waterways and sports fields. Orlando North also has an abundance of farm-fresh food and eateries that cater to locavore enthusiasts who welcome visitors to see, sample and savor.

A handful of small “boutique” farms are helping to provide fruits, vegetables, honey, meat, poultry and eggs to restaurants in the Orlando North, Seminole County area as well as to home cooks.

Waterkist Farm, started in Sanford in 2000, is nestled in a mixed-use residential community of multi-acre lots, and the hydroponic farm grows over 30 varieties of tomatoes, vegetables, herbs and sprouts. Its produce is available year-round at the Winter Park Farmers Market, as well as at their on-site specialty grocery store, 5735 Deer Path, Sanford. 407-322-7110.

In nearby Geneva, the Happy Bee Honey farm’s sweet and natural nectar can be found in gourmet stores, tearooms, B&Bs, farmers markets, and select retail shops throughout Central Florida. It also has a Honey of the Month Club and offers a variety of classes.

Family owned and operated Geneva Beef Company features locally raised USDA certified grass-fed Black Angus that is 100% antibiotic- and hormone-free. Choice cuts are sold at the Oviedo Farmers Market the first Saturday of every month. Orders can also be placed by phone or email. 407-463-8695;

Rest Haven Farm at 381 Rest Haven Road, Geneva, produces premium hydroponic vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers) available at farmers markets. Its also fills custom orders using logos and other gift packaging. 407-349-0111.
