While the pros battle for the championship at Wimbledon this week, Harmony Coach Ann Moss required no competition to decide who to pencil in at No. 1 singles this season.
Victor Lopez, who transferred to Harmony prior to his junior year, was the obvious choice.
And a good one.
He not only dominated in county play the past two years, but he won back-to-back 3A-7 district championships and competed at the state tennis tournament.
Lopez, the Osceola News-Gazette Tennis Player of the Year, lost only one time against Osceola County competition during his career, and that was against two-time player of the year Eddie Perez of St. Cloud in 2016.
The Longhorns senior said that he depends on more than his physical skills for success.
“I do think the best part of my game is the mental toughness,” he said.
He also credits Coach Moss for his improvement on the court.
“I do think I improved my technique, but I have to say that I had the best beside me (in Coach Moss),” Lopez said.
Moss said that Lopez had an excellent season for Harmony and deserves to be recognized as the county’s best male player.
“I am thrilled for him. He totally deserves it,” she said. “He is a tremendous young man, and a pretty good tennis player.”
Lopez planned to compete in USTA juniors tournaments over the summer to improve his skills further.
Even though he was bumped in the first round of the state tournament twice, Lopez said that competing at high school’s premiere tennis event twice was a great experience.
“I always think that every big or little victory that I got, it was God’s willing and for me, it was a blessing,” he said.
Lopez said that he enjoys tennis because it is so demanding.
“It is a sport that requires perseverance and technique,” he said. “One of my goals is to go to college and play tennis, and if I have the opportunity to become a pro tennis player that would be a dream come true.”
