Recently graduated Osceola High softball player Abigail Kendrick got a nice summer surprise when she got a call from the coach at Eastern Florida State College with a scholarship offer.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all. I didn’t think I would have an opportunity like this,” she said during her signing ceremony at the OHS gym.
Coach Jim Beita recently was hired to lead the Titans, who reached the Florida College System Activities Association state tournament in April.
Eastern Florida State College is the former Brevard Community College, located in Melbourne.
Kendrick said that she was considering her options when the scholarship offer arrived.
“The coach said that he had one more scholarship to give, and he asked me if I wanted it,” she said.
The answer was an easy one, she said.
Kendrick, a versatile player who helped Osceola’s march to the regional finals last spring, said that she is happy to plug in at whatever position her college coach needs her to play.
“I’m going to be like a utility player, whatever they want me to do,” she said.
It is a good role for the player who deserves an opportunity to take her skills to the college level said OHS coach George Coffey.
“Abby, she can play anywhere – infield, outfield, you name it,” he said. “I’m thrilled that she is getting the chance to play in college. I can tell you right now that they are getting a good one.”
Kendrick said that she plans to study psychology with the possibility of going into law enforcement.
