It’s raining cats, dogs and sharks. Sharknado heads for the big screen with the Rifftrax gang in control
By Peter Covino
If Sharknado wasn’t crazy enough on the home TV screen, here is your chance to see those hungry sharks falling from the sky on the big screen.
The insanely ridiculous Sharknado will get the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment, well at least from the same crew, as Rifftrax takes on the killer sharks in Rifftrax Live: Sharknado.
The special event is at theaters nationwide, including several in Central Florida, Thursday, July 10.
The craziness will be broadcast live from the historic State Theater in Minneapolis at 8 p.m., with a second showing on Tuesday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. local time.
The Rifftrax gang Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett will have plenty of ammunition ready in the instant classic tale of sharks being sucked up into the sky by a storm and falling from the skies (and swimming in the streets) of Los Angeles.
From the Fathom events press release: “We’re excited to have landed the big fish that is Sharknado. For a long time we’ve wanted to do a shark based movie as well as a tornado based film so we think combining the two will be twice as thrilling for our audience,” said Michael J. Nelson, RiffTrax creator and former host of the Emmy-nominated, Peabody Award-winning “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”
“We have had tremendous success separately with both ’Sharknado’ and RiffTrax. Putting the two of them together is a marriage made in apocalyptic, flying-shark heaven,” said Dan Diamond, senior vice president of Fathom Events. “Fans are going to be figuratively, and probably literally, rolling on the floor laughing.”
Sharknado premiered on Syfy on July 11, 2013, becoming an immediate worldwide sensation, generating nearly 5,000 tweets a minute and quickly amassing nearly 400,000 social mentions. In August, Fathom Events and The Asylum held a raucous midnight showing in more than 200 theaters nationwide. Fans should also keep an eye out for “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” which will premiere Wednesday July 30 on Syfy.
Produced by The Asylum, Sharknado is the story of beachside bar regulars including owner Fin (Ian Ziering, “Beverly Hills 90210”), bartender Nova (Casie Scerbo, “Make It Or Break It”) and local drunk George (John Heard, “Home Alone”) as they team up with Fin’s ex-wife April (Tara Reid, “Scrubs”) to investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies.
The event will be presented in nearly 650 select movie theaters around the country through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. Area theaters presenting Sharknado include Universal Cineplex, Cinemark Orlando, Downtown Disney 24, Pointe Orlando and Winter Park Stadium 20.

There is a different kind of battle coming up July 12 when Fathom Events, Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime PPV team up for one of the biggest fights of the summer in movie theaters nationwide with “Honor & Glory: Canelo vs. Lara.
The fight will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at 9 p.m. as Mexican boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez returns to the ring to face rising Cuban sensation and WBA Junior Middleweight World Champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara.
In addition to Saturday’s main fight, the undercard will match former three-division world champion Abner Mares with Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Oquendo. Johan Perez will defend his interim WBA Junior Welterweight World Championship against Mauricio Herrera. Rounding out the four-fight card, Puerto Rican star and former world champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez will battle Mexico’s Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas.
“Honor & Glory: Canelo vs. Lara” will be shown at the following cinemas in Central Florida:
AMC Altamonte Mall 18 with IMAX 433 E Altamonte Dr Altamonte Springs.
AMC Universal Cineplex 20 with IMAX
6000 Universal Blvd.
Regal Winter Park Stadium 20
510 N. Orlando Ave Winter Park.

And finally, also from Fathom Events, for the first time in more than three decades, Monty Python comedy legends John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin will reunite on stage for a special, historic trip down memory lane.
The famous comedy troupe will appear live on screen Sunday, July 20, at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, and Thursday, July 24, at 7:30 pm local time.
Tickets for “Monty Python Live (mostly)” are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com. The event will be presented in more than 420 select movie theaters in the United States through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network. “What could be finer at the end of a long life in comedy, than a chance to reunite with old pals and say goodbye to all our fans in one final mad musical show,” said Eric Idle, in a release promoting the upcoming event.
“We are very excited that not only do we get the chance to screw up on stage, we get a chance to screw up live in cinemas too.”
Monty Python holds a place among the world’s finest comedians, influencing generations and revolutionizing comedy. Monty Python first hit U.K. TV screens with ”Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which saw 45 episodes broadcast over four BBC series between 1969 and 1974. The Pythons were an instant success and became the face of British comedy. They went on to achieve overwhelming international acclaim with the huge success of films such as “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” in 1975, “Life of Brian” in 1979 and their final film, “The Meaning of Life” in 1983.
“Monty Python fans won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this iconic comedy troupe in their only onstage reunion,” said Dan Diamond, senior vice president of Fathom Events. “The Python’s will be at their finest, leaving fans in movie theaters rolling in the aisles as they relive some of the greatest moments in comedy history.”
“We’re delighted to be working with Fathom to bring this very special event to audiences throughout the United States,” said Marc Allenby, director of distribution at Picturehouse Entertainment.
