The countdown is on — there only is one more week until Free Comic Book Day.
Comic book collectors probably are already familiar with that special day, one day a year, when comic book stores nationwide give away dozens of comic book titles.
This year the Coliseum of Comic stores in Central Florida, including the Kissimmee location, are participating in the free comic book distribution, which will be Saturday, May 3. Also participating, with a day of special events, is Mike’s Comics and Collectibles, 8110 S. Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando.
In addition to free comic books, Mike’s will host special guest artist of Batman: Detective Comics & Batman: Eternal, Jason Fabok. Fabok will do in-store signing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shop. There also will be face painting, raffles and a storewide sale.
For fans of comic books, it doesn’t get much better than Free Comic Book Day. There are no strings or gimmicks. All participating stores get a supply of titles to be given away. Supplies are limited, so early arrivals will get a bigger selection of comic books to take home.
It is the biggest day of the year in the comic book industry, according to Deborah Morleand,  marketing associate with Diamond Comic Book Distributors. This year, a total of 60 different titles will be available for free.
The event features both new and classic characters from the world of comics. This year’s free comics include Teen Titans Go!, SpongeBob, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Simpsons, Transformers, and many more. The titles will vary, but there is something for everyone, from youngsters to adults.
Free Comic Book Day was created for both old fans to discover new titles as well as new fans to discover what comic books are all about.
Last year an estimated 1.2 million people went to their local comic shop to take home some of the 4.6 million comics that were given away for free.
The complete list of this year’s comics include
