There aren’t too many days on the TV calendar where I at least make a mental note that a movie or TV series will be on.
Nothing was as historic as the return of another season of The Sopranos. And Six Feet Under consistently had some of the best scripts ever for a TV series.
Game of Thrones, yet another HBO series probably has me waiting most fervently. But very close behind is Showtime’s Shameless, which returns for a fourth season on the premium channel, Sunday, Jan. 12 at 9 p.m.
That isn’t too long a wait, fortunately, but you can catch up on all that went right (as usual, not too much) and wrong with the Gallagher family with Shameless: The Complete Third Season, available in a Blu-ray combo pack as well as standard DVD.
It didn’t take long for the Gallaghers to become one of the most outrageous families in the history of TV and they continued to march very much to their own drummer in season three.
Here is what happened in a nutshell, via the Shameless press release:
Season three of Shameless picks up 137 days since viewers last spent time with the Gallaghers. Fiona (series star Emmy Rossum) is scrounging for cash and finds herself in a succession of jobs, including club party promoter, grocery store cashier, and office worker. Lip is sentenced to community service after stealing a laser, while Ian struggles to prevent Mickey from marrying a woman his father is forcing him to wed. Jimmy contemplates returning to medical school; Veronica and Kevin are determined to have a baby; Carl becomes part of a scheme to cheat a children’s foundation; and Frank, after partying harder than usual, wakes up in Mexico without the papers or cash to get back home. As if their daily struggles weren’t enough, Fiona and her siblings have to deal with Child Protective Services threatening to take away the kids.
And that is just a teasing sample.
William H. Macy is actually the top-billed star, playing dad Frank, who (except for that occasonal lapse when he shows a glimmer of good parenting) is the worst father on TV. And Macy is so good out at it.
The Complete Third Season features all 12 episodes from the show’s third season, plus more than  60 minutes of bonus content including six featurettes and deleted scenes.
The Blu-ray combo includes a digital UltraViolet copy for viewing episodes on tablets, computers and smartphones.
“Fans love Shameless for the superb acting, writing, and complex characters,” said Rosemary Markson, WBHE Senior Vice President, TV and Special Interest Marketing. She added, “Season 3 gives these fans even more of what they love and we’re thrilled to release it on Blu-ray and DVD.  With six all new behind-the-scenes featurettes available on both formats, fans will get an even deeper look into the dysfunctional and captivating lives of the Gallaghers.”
Based on the long-running, award-winning British series by the same name, Shameless was adapted for American television by John Wells and original UK series creator Paul Abbott (State of Play) and made its U.S. debut on Showtime January 9, 2011. The series developed a loyal fan base during the first season, with ratings continuing to climb during subsequent seasons. Shameless is one of Showtime’s top three series across Households, Total Viewers, Adults, Women & Men 18-34, 18-49, 25-54. The series averaged nearly 2.5 million total viewers in its third season, 20 percent higher than Season Two.
Shameless is executive produced by John Wells, Andrew Stearn and Mark Mylod. The series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Season Three of Shameless stars Macy, Rossum (Mystic River, Beautiful Creatures), Justin Chatwin (Taken, Weeds), Ethan Cutkosky (Fred Claus), Shanola Hampton (You Again), Steve Howey (Reba), Emma Kenney (The New Girl in Town), Cameron Monaghan (Fringe, The Mentalist), Jeremy Allen White (Afterschool), Noel Fisher (Hatfields & McCoys), Emma Greenwell (True Blood), Zach McGowan (Terminator: Salvation) and special guest star Joan Cusack (Working Girl, In & Out).

Where the Streets Have No Shame (Featurette)
The Many Sides of Sheila (Featurette)
An Officer and a Gallagher (Featurette)
A Lip Off the Old Block (Featurette)

Bronies
If you think you have seen everything you need to see Bronies (available Dec. 17, from MVD Visual).
If you were a little girl, you probably loved My Little Pony growing up. If you are a guy, well you probably cringe at the thought.
Or maybe not.
Bronies The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony focuses on fans, mostly adult men, who love My Little Pony.
This is not what you might expect at all.
You would think that Bronie guys would be, even though it is a stereotypical thought, be mostly gay.
The guys featured here who collect and love those pastel-colored horses would seem to be predominately straight. Some are quite open about their fondness for all things pony, but some seem to be uptight and nervous about their obsession — until they go to My Little Pony conventions and the biggest convention of all, Bronycon.
It is then that these guys (and girls too) really let there hair down.
It is an unusual cult to say the least and if you watch and are a guy, you may not become a Bronie yourself, but you will at least have a better understanding of how this is even possible.
