Osceola County School District to have 20 charter schools by 2015

The list of charter schools in Osceola County is slated to reach 20 by the fall of 2015, as the School District approved eight more to open over the next two years.
The board unanimously approved each application at its Oct. 15 meeting. School officials said the new schools would add the capacity to teach nearly 4,700 students in the county.

The schools that were approved include: Avant Garde Academy K-8 of Osceola Charter School, Brighton Lakes Charter School, Osceola Science Charter School, Montessori Charter, School, Montessori Charter Academy, Renaissance Charter School and Charter High School at Osceola Charter School, Summit High School of Osceola County and CHAMPS Charter School.
The board approved the schools with the expectation of high achievement.
“We’re looking for high-performing, high-quality charter schools that are going to meet the educational needs of our students,” district 3 member Tim Weisheyer said. “We must establish the importance of making sure we have a collaborative effort.”
Five Star Schools
In other business, the board recognized the 35 public schools that have been designated as Five Star Schools, the highest Florida Department of Education award for community involvement.
The award is presented each year to schools that have shown evidence of exemplary family, school, and community involvement and that meet all of the state’s established criteria. Doing so requires full engagement from local business partners, volunteers, students, families, and the School Advisory Council.
Those schools earning the recognition include:
Elementary schools — Boggy Creek, Central Avenue, Chestnut, Elementary for Science and Engineering, Cypress, East Lake, Flora Ridge, Hickory Tree, Highlands, Kissimmee, Koa, Lakeview, Michigan Avenue, Mill Creek, Narcoosee, Neptune, Partin Settlement, Pleasant Hill, Reedy Creek, St. Cloud, Sunrise and Thacker Avenue Elementary for International Studies.
Middle schools — Narcoossee, Neptune Middle, Parkway and St. Cloud.
High schools — Celebration, Harmony, Osceola and St. Cloud
Charter and others — Celebration K-8, Westside K-8, Harmony, Osceola County School for the Arts, Bellalago Academy and Kissimmee Charter.
