18th Annual Sunshine Regional Chili Cook-off set for Jan. 18

Posted on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 12:57 pm

The city of Kissimmee will host the 18th Annual Kissimmee Sunshine Regional Chili Cook-off event on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kissimmee Lakefront Park Civic Lawn.
Competitors from across the state of Florida and throughout the nation will show off their cooking skills at this International Chili Society sanctioned event. Participants will battle for cash prizes in several competitive categories, including Red Chili, Chili Verde, Salsa, People’s Choice and the newly-added Homestyle category.
The new Homestyle category is defined by the International Chili Society as “the cook’s favorite combination of ingredients resulting in a dish seasoned with chili peppers and spices,” according to a city press release.
Local dignitaries, experienced chili judges and event sponsors will serve as official judges of the chili. Spectators can participate by casting their vote for the People’s Choice Award from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.  The general public will be able to sample all of the competitor’s chili after they submit their entries to the judges at 3:30 p.m.
The event will have more than $4,000 in cash/prizes, including $1,500 for the first-place winner.  All competitive cooking is done on site and more than 50 competitors battled in last year’s event with even more expected this January. The competition is open to the public; pre-registration is required to be a competitor.  All competitors must be a member of the International Chili Society.
The Kissimmee Sunshine Regional Chili Cook-off is supported in part by the following sponsors: City of Kissimmee Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Department, Kissimmee Utility Authority, Cox Media Group and Experience Kissimmee.
